Big Slough Wilderness

We went on an expotition yesterday so Dave could collect some river cane (he wants to try making arrows out of it) and Jed and I could see some new country. We went to the Big Slough Wilderness, which is part of the Davy Crockett Nat'l Forest.

It was a great day to be out, not too hot or humid (although my definition of what is "too hot" is quickly changing--there is a lot more I'm willing to put up with now).

The trail was a little overgrown, but Dave has plans to change that.

One really great thing about all the trees and undergrowth is that it is really shady in the forest. I love the beautiful canopy of trees.

Here's one of the streams we crossed--definitely different from those high-mountain streams we're used to:

Another thing I'm getting used to is all the animal and insect life that flourishes here. There were a ton of little spider webs stretched across the trail, so Dave led the way with his machete and knocked them down for us. We came upon the most awesome web and the spider was at home, so we watched him repair his web for a while.
We had fun looking at lots of different flowers and butterflies, too. I'm still working on identifying different flowers, but we had stopped by the library to get a book on East Texas trees before we left, because I am tired of stumbling around in the forest and saying "hmmm, this looks like a blah-blah-blah, but I'm not sure." It was really nice to be able to have a reference and I'm already feeling more knowledgeable about the surrounding trees. Now I just need to work on the flowers!

It is called the Big Slough Wilderness because there are so many marshy/swampy/sloughy areas. Here is one of the coolest we saw as we were driving:

There were a lot of egrets and herons. I'm glad we got a chance to see them before they got scared of us and flew away.

As I said, the real purpose of our little jaunt was so Dave could check out the cane and cut some. Jed thought the cane was pretty cool, too.

He carried his little piece around the whole time we were walking and had a great time whacking Dave with it. Once we got back to the truck, he wouldn't even put it down to eat his little snack of apples and crackers.

And, Dave got quite a few pieces of cane and is ready to let the dry and try them out.

It was a really fun day. I love being able to be out in the forest with my men, seeing new things and talking together.
