Tuesday felt like we were driving through molasses in January--it was sooooo sloooowww. In the first place, since we got in so late, we slept in and took Jed swimming, since we had promised him we would go when we got to the hotel. When we finally got on the road, we ran into some road construction, and even though the repairs to the road were no big deal, it seemed like it was a very big deal to the drivers on the road. It seriously took us 2 hours to go 10 miles. At one point, Hannah and I saw a sign that said "reduced speed ahead." We looked at each other and at the odometer reading barely 10 mph and said "We can't go any slower! We're going to have to park!" In spite of the road construction, we finally made it through Arkansas and into Missouri.
The thing I remember most about Missouri is the mileage markers. In Texas, they don't even use mileage markers unless you're in the bigger cities. In Missouri, they mark out the tenths of the miles.
It's like they want you to know exactly how much distance you're covering.
We crossed the Mississippi river!
I have seen the Mississippi before, at Nauvoo, but no matter how many times you see it, it's still awe-inspiring. It's just so big! so much water in a river!
We crossed the Illinois border and spent the night in Marion.
Dave, Jed and Hannah had a great time in the pool. Lucky Jed--swimming twice in one day!
I have to say how much I love Hannah! She is such a good sport. She has helped us move 3 times now, each longer distances than the last, and she has never complained one bit. She did way more work this trip than I did--cleaning in Crockett, driving through the worst of the traffic, putting up with us and all of our craziness. We really owe you, Hannah!
Watching Jed in the pool made me think of our cross-country trip last August, when we went to Wyoming to go backpacking. Jed has grown so much since then. Last year he couldn't touch the bottom of the pool at all. This year, he can walk by himself to the 3 1/2 foot mark and loves to stand on his own and splash around. It's amazing how quickly he has grown.
Such a cool dude, before we left the hotel the next morning. Jed was such a great traveler! He loved to ride with Dave, because he could sit in the front seat and actually see out (the truck has a great feature where you can turn off the front airbag). When he would get bored or needy, he would come and ride with Hannah and I where one of us could entertain him a little better. He would try to watch a movie each day on the laptop, but 2 out of the 3 days, he fell asleep before he got too far in. It's hard work riding in a car seat all day!
Wednesday we made it through the rest of Illinois and all of Indiana. Indiana was really beautiful, full of rolling farmland and it seemed like every barn was painted red and every farmhouse was painted white. It was almost too cute. Wednesday night we spent in the most adorable town, Marshall MI. I forgot to take my camera as we went out to find a restaurant, but should you ever find yourself in southern Michigan, definitely stop and enjoy Marshall. It was so awesome!
Thursday we had a short 4 hour drive into Oscoda. It was a little strange to stop the cars and know that we were "home." We were all glad to stop the cars and know that we didn't have to get back in for long stretches any more! Stay tuned for our first adventures here!
