Happy Birthday Davey!

Dave turned 31 on Friday! Unlike last year, we decided to just keep things small. Friday was a busy day for us so we celebrated on Saturday with amazing lasagna and the BEST chocolate cake. The boys were such good helpers as we made cake and frosting and decorated the kitchen. Jed is not normally into cooking that much but he really loved making the cake.
He helped me decide where the streamers should go and where to hang our happy birthday banner. I do not love our tiny kitchen but it certainly is festive!
Jed and Hank enthusiastically picked out the candles during our regular shopping trip and waited anxiously until it was time to break them out and put them on the cake. Hank was napping so Jed helped me make sure the frosting was chocolatey enough and put on the candles.
Wow, that is a lot of fire on a pretty small cake!
Jed looks disgruntled because he wanted to blow out the candles. After Dave had his turn, each of the boys got a turn with a few candles.

 And then we feasted!

When I asked Dave what he needed/wanted for his birthday, he said he didn't want anything. I tried to suggest a variety of small things he might want, but nothing sounded good to him. After mulling things over a bit, Dave said what he really wanted was to buy ME a new bike! Dave got his new bike last year at Easter and he has been watching to find me a similar one at a good price. He finally found it, so instead of getting him anything, we sold my old bike and one our neighbor gave us at our yard sale, and bought my new one.
I felt really bad that he didn't get to choose anything for himself, but as we were riding around the block together after Dave had assembled my new bike (so I could get comfortable with the gears and adjust the brakes and the seat), Dave told me "I just want us to be able to ride together and have fun, and this is the best present of all." After gliding along so comfortably on my new steed, I have to agree! It is so nice to be able to shift easily and straighten out my legs while I ride. We rode the bikes to the church on Saturday for a wedding reception and again to church on Sunday with the boys in the cart. It was wonderful! I am truly spoiled by my wonderful Davey. Just to show him how much I adore him, I gave him a small present of dried bananas, which I cannot stand--because I am bananas for him! Happy Birthday, Davey!

Happy Birthday Dave! That is so sweet about the bike. And I love how you actually used the right amount of candles (and they are cute candles too!). We are always lame and "scale it" and do 1 or 2 or say, "Okay each candle equals five years" because we only have 6 in the drawer, haha.
