Jed has been super-needy lately. I admit, it's driving me a little bananas. I love that he loves to play with us, but it would be nice to be in the bathroom for more than 15 seconds without him screaming. I think our bleary weather is making us all somewhat crazy.

Any suggestions for encouraging Jed to play on his own once in a while?

whenever Heather is in her highchair i always go about normally... walking out of sight and back into the kitchen (this seems to help with not being so anxious when you are out of sight) the food is a good distractor (just keep a close ear for choking and what not).
also whenever you're going to go somewhere without him tell him exactly where you are going "mama's gonna go throw this in the trash, or change the cat's water, or go to the bathroom... and she'll be right back" it seems silly announcing yourself but it helps them know that you're not just leaving for good.
don't try to sneak out when he's occupied with a toy, cause when he realizes your missing it is much worse for him (mommy has disappeared and i'm all alone)...
just leave him be with some toys, tell him where you're going, and even if he cries make the short trips and come back and say... "see that was okay, mommy said she'd be right back."
this has totally worked for us and Heather is okay playing by herself as long as i'm in the house... and not heading out the front door or to the garage.
I was going to give you some advice, but it seems like someone beat me to it. So breanneryandmurray, do you have any advice on how to get a 3 year old to play by himself?
