Dave's parents came to visit us this past weekend and we were so excited to have them stay for a while. We decided the best way to show off our new home would be to take them canoing, so that's what we did on Saturday. We borrowed a canoe from one of the boys in Dave's scout troop so we didn't all have to cram into ours, packed a lunch and headed out for a fun day on the river.

The canoe launch site. The fall colors were just getting going along the river and it was a beautiful, warmish day, perfect for enjoying the river.
Jed loves his grandparents and was determined to ride with them in their canoe. He had a great time sticking his paddle--and his arms--in the water. He only lost his paddle and his hat once!

We had to stop to feed Hank about halfway through our trip. We found a place with a wooden staircase that came down from the road so I didn't have to sit in the dirt to feed him. We hadn't been there terribly long when a group of kids came down to go fishing, since the salmon have started running on the AuSable river.
Jed had a good time talking to them and watching them fish. He "accidentally" stepped in the water and then since I didn't get after him for getting his shoes wet, he got almost all the way in. He had a great time wading and didn't seem to notice that the water was cold.
I think he would have gone all the way in if we hadn't been watching him closely. What a guy!
After Hank was fed, he was so happy and smiley! I love taking this boy places--he seems to thoroughly enjoy exploring his surroundings, especially if he's outside.
Once Hank was full, we got back in our canoes for the last leg of the journey. It was so peaceful on the river and I was so glad we went out.
One of the coolest things we saw were the salmon running. It's just the beginning of the run, so there weren't tons of fish yet, but we did see about 10. They were HUGE!
The fish is the dark smudge in the middle of the picture. We could see them really well with our polarized sunglasses but that doesn't transfer very well through a camera lens!
The salmon swam right under the bow of our canoe and then alongside us for a second. If we would have had a net, we would have been eating fish for dinner Saturday night!It was so huge--as long as Dave's arm at least. Dave touched the fish with his paddle and he splashed and swam away. It was pretty cool.
The second leg of the trip, Hank stayed awake for a while and he really enjoyed looking at the trees and the clouds in the sky. I tried so hard to get his little coos on video but every time I pulled out the camera, he became incredibly solemn.
It was such a fun day canoing and I am so glad we went. It was really, really nice to spend some peaceful time with Scott and Elsa and it was so fun to watch Jed play with his grandparents. We had a great day!
