New York trip, part VIII

I know you're saying "seriously, more of this trip? Enough already." Well, never fear, we're almost done. Bear with me.

As I said before, Dave's grandparents live very near the Erie Canal. We spent a little bit of time exploring the town of Brockport, which sits on the canal itself. We went into a few little shops and walked along the canal before going back to the lake house and letting the kids play on our last night.
There were these cool lift bridges at basically every canal crossing. They rise up when boats need to go underneath. We were so hopeful every time we approached the bridge that this time would be the one it would be up and we would get to see a boat going underneath, but it never happened.
The canal next to a beautiful old brick building.
These locust trees were dropping their leaves and the sidewalk looked like gold. I love this picture of the kids. We found the coolest snails on all the trees; they had the most beautiful colorful shells. The kids thought it was so fun to take the snails off the trees and look at their soft underparts, but we stopped them after only a couple of snails because then the snails wouldn't grab the trees again. We just set them gently at the bottom of the trees.

I was really glad we went on this little walk. I enjoyed thinking about my ancestors who worked on the Erie Canal, and all the saints who traveled from New York to Kirtland on the canal. That is an exodus we don't really think about and I was grateful to see a little bit of what they saw. It was beautiful.
