Ice on Lake Huron

Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day, although it was FREEZING! We decided after Hank's nap that we should go for a walk on the pier to look at the ice on the lake. I am not sure if you've heard, but the Great Lakes are experiencing record ice levels this year. You can check out some images here if you're interested--it's spectacular. Anyhow, we decided we should take some pictures for posterity's sake and be a part of history!

 Not surprisingly, we were the only ones at the beach park. Everyone else was totally missing out; it was a gorgeous day.

 I think Jed thought we were crazy, to take a walk in that frigid weather just to look at some ice. But he gamely ran along.

 And looking north. The sand usually extends about 10 feet out from that hump in the middle of the photo, but it is hard to tell where the beach ends and the ice begins with the snow cover.

Looking out toward the lake. The blue line at the horizon is open water. It seems so far away!

 We went north to Alpena on Saturday and did see some open water, but if the maps linked to above are correct, it is some of the only open water on Lake Huron. In two weeks we are headed to the U.P. so Dave can attend some training for work. We are excited to see the Straits all frozen up--of course I will take pictures and report back!
